How passengers can stop unsafe driving

Posted on: 03-20-2012 Posted in: car safety, distracted driving, Drinking and Driving, DUI

A recent accident has prompted questions about passenger safety. Specifically, what can a passenger do if he or she feels unsafe because of the driver’s behavior? Whether the driver is impaired by drugs or alcohol or is engaged in an unsafe behavior such as sending text messages or a similarly distracting behavior, the passenger can avoid a potentially dangerous or even fatal situation by exercising one of many options, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Walking home, if the distance isn’t too great, is a viable backup plan, as is calling a designated driver. Even if your trusted ride is inconveniently far away, the risks at stake make a safer situation worth waiting for. Carrying sufficient cab fare to get you home in case of emergencies might also be a good idea. Telling someone not to drunk drive or text behind the wheel can be a difficult thing to do, but it’s the right course of action, according to the state patrol. If that doesn’t work and if you don’t realize the ride is an unsafe situation until after the vehicle is in motion, call the police, who will try to stop the vehicle before it can cause harm to you or others.

As an Oakland car accident lawyer, I believe that any accident that can be avoided is an accident that should be avoided. If you or someone you love has been injured in a collision please consider hiring an Oakland personal injury attorney.
