Police offer tips for safer motorcycle riding
After eight serious motorcycle-related crashes occurred in a single weekend in the same area, a Holland, Michigan public safety officer offered several tips for safer cycling.
Wearing a helmet at all times is a primary concern. The Michigan legislature is currently debating whether to repeal the state’s helmet laws, but a helmet is an essential piece of motorcycle equipment whether the law requires it or not. Other protective clothing such as riding pants, gloves, boots, and a jacket are also recommended in addition to a United States Department of Transportation approved motorcycle helmet.
Riders should also be aware of their bikes capabilities and their own skill level. Speeding or pushing your bike or yourself beyond your limits can endanger your life and the lives of those sharing the road with you,
Taking a motorcycle safety class is an effective way to avoid citations. There is no minimum age for motorcycle passengers, the law demands they be able to touch the footrests while sitting, ad riders wearing helmets not approved by the States Department of Transportation can also be ticketed. Modifying headlights to increase your visibility is also a good idea.
