Augmented Reality App Aims to Make Commute Safer

Posted on: 03-30-2012 Posted in: car safety, car technology, News

Many high end luxury automobiles are coming out with safety features designed to correct when you drift into another lane, warn you when you’re too close to another vehicle, and just generally help you avoid those dangers that could cause an accident.  But how can you keep yourself safe if you can’t plunk down the kind of money necessary to purchase such an automobile?

An app for a smart phone might indeed be your best bet.  An Android app known as iOnRoad Augmented Reality is the latest technology that’s designed to make your commute a bit safer.  For those that are unaware, augmented reality is a technology that uses some kind of screen to display a digital overlay of information on top of streaming video.

In this case, the app can display real time information about obstacles that appear in front of the car.  By mounting your phone onto the dashboard and starting the app, you can get a readout of how fast you are going, how far away cars are in front of you, and warnings that indicate (based off of your calculated speed and distance) when you are in danger of a crash or of drifting into another lane.  It even highlights your lane in green.

These are just a few of many features available, and I can’t help but get excited about this technology as a Roseville car accident attorney.  This app and others like it are just beginning to explore the possibilities of increased safety, and it’s my desire as a personal injury lawyer in Roseville that we see more technology along these lines.
