Pacific Coast Fruit Company recalls bagged salad due to listeria scare
Under the supervision of the United States Food and Drug Administration, Pacific Coast Fruit Company has issued a voluntary recall for several varieties of its bagged processed salad mixes due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause severe and occasionally deadly illness in people with weakened or compromised immune systems such as children, the elderly, and those infected with HIV or AIDS. Consumers with healthy immune systems may suffer from abnormally high body temperatures, serious headaches, muscle stiffness, stomach pain, diarrhea and nausea. Pregnant women who consume listeria contaminated food may experience miscarriages or still births. Pacific Coast products affected by this recall include Chef on the Run Garden Salad in a 9.6 ounce clamshell style package bearing universal product code 20728 71136, Mio Fratello Garden Salad in a 9.6 ounce clamshell style package bearing universal product code 20728 71164, Mio Fratello Deluxe Salad with Ranch Dressing in a 10 ounce clamshell style package bearing universal product code 20728 71600, Mio Fratello Deluxe Salad with Balsamic Dressing in a 10 ounce clamshell style package bearing universal product code 20728 71602, Mio Fratello Deluxe Salad with 1000 Island Dressing in a 10 ounce clamshell style package bearing universal product code 20728 71603. All bagged processed salad mixes affected by this recall are imprinted with an expiration date ranging from May 15, 2012 to May 26, 2012. Under United States law, it is illegal to knowingly sell any product recalled for health reasons.
