Pedestrian Running Along 15 Freeway Dies After Police Tasing
The city of Barstow yesterday bore witness to a strange incident that started with a report of a traffic accident and ended with the death of a man who had been Tased by officers.
It all started around 2 o’clock in the morning, when the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian on the 15 Freeway. This reportedly had taken place near South Lenwood Road. However, the driver of the automobile supposedly involved in the collision called the CHP to tell them that reports that there was a pedestrian strike were mistaken, and that instead their passenger had exited the vehicle while it was traveling north.
When the police got there, the pedestrian who left the vehicle allegedly started tossing rocks at the officers responding to the incident. At this point, the man reportedly took off running across the freeway, and in an attempt to subdue him, the officers used Tasers. Once the man was handcuffed, though, officers discovered that he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.
Officials reportedly tried to revive the man, but it was to no avail. The Barstow Fire Department arrived on scene and transported the individual to Barstow Community Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at that location.
Both the CHP Critical Incident Investigation Team and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the incident.
