Daimler Trucks recalls 900 school buses due to injury risk
At the request of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a voluntary recall has been issued by Daimler Trucks of North America for nearly 900 of various models of Thomas Built school buses due to a potential wheelchair ramp malfunction that can cause a fall hazard to handicapped commuters. Certain model year 2007 through 2011 Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2, Saf-T-Liner HDX, Minotour, Saf-T-Liner EF school buses have been equipped with potentially defective Braun Century-2 or Vista-2 wheel chair ramps that may deteriorate with routine use. In the process of prolonged regular heavy use, the ramp’s outer barrier roll stop latches may become dented or misaligned. Wheelchairs may roll across these misaligned roll stop latches. If this situation occurs while the ramp is elevated, the wheelchair’s occupant may be at risk of a fall that could lead to serious injury. Consumers in possession of school buses affected by this recall will be notified by Daimler Trucks of North America of the potential safety issue created by the Braun or Vista wheel chair ramps in the near future. Owners of affected Thomas Built school buses may return them to authorized Braun dealers, where the wheel chair lift will be repaired at no cost to the consumer. Consumers in search of more information on this recall can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline and reference campaign identification number 12V225000.
