Trailmaster trailers included in brake failure recall

Posted on: 05-25-2012 Posted in: car safety, Product Recall

Trailmaster Incorporated, at the request of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has issued a voluntary recall notice for 12 model year 2011 Gooseneck Dual Tandem Trailers. The Trailmaster Gooseneck Dual Tandem Trailer is the latest trailer to be recalled due to a potential flaw in the manufacturing process of the trailers’ Dexter Axle brand electric hydraulic brake actuator pumps that might lead to brake failure. The possibility exists that the Dexter Axle brand electric hydraulic brake actuator pumps installed in these trailers may not have been properly heat treated, leading to a lack of durability that might cause a premature break down of the actuator pumps’ internal components. If the brake actuator pump fails unexpectedly during routine use, power for the trailer’s brake system will be cut off, potentially causing the brakes to become inoperable. Brake failure increases the likelihood that the vehicle hauling the trailer will become involved in an automobile accident, potentially causing serious injury or death. Trailermaster Incorporated has not yet announced a notification schedule for this recall, but owners of affected trailers may return them to authorized Dexter dealerships where the potentially faulty brake actuator pumps will be replaced at no cost to the consumer. More information regarding this recall can be obtained by calling the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline and referencing campaign identification number 12V223000 and NHTSA action number EQ12003.
