Agency tests effectiveness of new auto safety features
Safety technology in cars is evolving quickly. Some of the new devices in new models are night vision assistance, which uses infrared light to combat dark roads, and the inclusion of side-impact airbags that deploy when collision is detected. Rear-impact detection is also an option, which means seats will adjust head restraints to protect passengers’ necks and spines if the car is rear ended. Lane departure prevention warns the driver if they’re swerving or drifting. The Highway Data Loss Institute is currently collecting data on the effectiveness of all these new features.
