University gives cyclists free headlights to increase safety Comments Off

Bicycle riders in the state of Texas are not legally required to wear safety helmets, but they are required to employ lights when cycling after sundown. In an effort to increase compliance with this law at the University of Texas, where more than 11,500 bicycles are registered on campus, the university’s department of Parking and Transportation Services will hold a parade of dancers, twirlers and other entertainers illuminated with LED lights. At this event, approximately 270 students, faculty and staff with valid IDs will receive free bicycle lights, and another 200 lights will be distributed throughout the city of Austin.

Bicycling safety advocates warn riders to watch for car doors Comments Off

Colliding with the suddenly opened door of a parked car is a serious safety concern for bicyclists, cycling advocates say, and cars traveling in the far right lane of traffic often squeeze bicyclists dangerously close to cars parked parallel to the curb. Many cycling safety advocates say that more dedicated bike lanes and lower speed limits on roadways with heavy bicycle traffic can reduce the dangers.

Drug processing plant assured sterility months before fatal outbreak Comments Off

New England Compounding Center, the drug processing facility linked to the fungal meningitis outbreak responsible for at least 29 deaths to date sent its customers a Quality Assurance Report Card declaring the sterility of its facilities in early 2012, according to the Boston Globe. According to the report card, all of the facilities equipment and laboratory space met federal guidelines for cleanliness, despite records from the company indicating that more than 30 samples taken from the facilities contained contaminant levels unacceptable under current federal guidelines. All drugs manufactured by the facility have been recalled after inspectors discovered visible contaminants in multiple vials of injectable steroids.

Car seat cost increase doesn’t translate to safety, experts say Comments Off

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines regulate the performance standards for all child safety seats sold in the United States. While these guidelines theoretically ensure that all available child safety restraints conform to the same minimum standards, some parents report concerns that lower cost car seats are less effective at protecting their children. Safety experts, however, say that car seat prices don’t always indicate safety ratings, and instead are often indicative of brand names, styles, and convenience features, and parents should research car seats before making a purchase to determine which model best suits their specific situation.

Bicycle safety a higher priority in Denmark than U.S., advocates say Comments Off

In the city of Copenhagen, Denmark, only slightly more than half of all households own a car, but 9 in 10 residents own a bicycle. More than one third report commuting by bicycle, according to survey results, and city officials have announced plans to increase that number to 50 percent within the next three years by spending up to one-fourth of its roadway infrastructure budget on bicycle lanes, parking spaces, and traffic light synchronization systems intended to make riding a bicycle safer and faster than driving a car. By comparison, the US city thought to have the greatest bicycling population is Portland, Oregon, where 6 percent of commuters report traveling by bicycle.

Auto agency urges increased pedestrian, bicycle safety Comments Off

The American Automobile Association released a statement recently reminding motorists to watch for pedestrians and cyclists, in an effort to decrease the thousands of cyclists and pedestrians that are struck by cars each year. When passing a bicycle, AAA representatives advise, motorists should allow at least three feet of space between their vehicle and the cyclist. Driving with headlights illuminated, even during the daytime, can increase visibility and give pedestrians advanced notice of a vehicle’s approach.

Partially collapsed tower crane poses serious safety issues Comments Off

The partially collapsed construction crane affixed to the top of an unfinished luxury high rise Manhattan was still hanging 700 feet above midtown on Wednesday after its boom was broken during severe storm Sandy. Like many other tower cranes throughout the city, the crane had been positioned in weather vane mode, designed to allow the crane to swivel in the direction of heavy winds instead of breaking. None of these cranes were removed prior to the storm, but city officials issued stop work orders at all construction sites throughout the city last week. Officials are currently determining the safest method for removing the crane before it completely collapses.
