Baldwin Park announces St. Patrick’s Day DUI crackdown Comments Off

In anticipation of increased liquor consumption over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Baldwin Park Police Department officers have announced they will be conducting a DUI Saturation Patrol on Friday and Sunday night. Officers will stop and arrest anyone suspected of driving under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol in the area. The California Highway Patrol is also encouraging partygoers to designate a sober driver before heading out for the night or to arrange another safe way to get home, such as planning to take public transportation. More than 300 people were arrested on DUI charges in the state of California last year, according to the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.

Law enforcement to crack down on DUIs on Super Bowl Sunday Comments Off

In preparation for Super Bowl Sunday on February 3, the California Highway Patrol is advising motorists who plan on drinking alcohol to designate a sober driver in order to avoid driving under the influence. CHP officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers, especially in Ventura County and Los Angeles County, the counties where the most accidents involving drunk drivers occur in the state each year. A nearly 40 mile segment of the 101 Freeway between the two counties will be the site of an increased enforcement effort targeting drunk drivers. This stretch of highway was the site of an average of five fatal accidents and 120 injury accidents during three separate 10-month periods between December of 2007 and September of 2010, according to the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.

In addition to increased drunk driving enforcement patrols, which the highway patrol began conducting in December of last year, the CHP will sponsor a public awareness campaign to educate about the dangers of drunken driving. This program was funded with a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

I hope that drivers will be cautious on Super Bowl Sunday and not be tempted to behave dangerously even on special occasions.

Lawmakers consider special drunk driving permits in rural Ireland Comments Off

County legislators in southwest Ireland recently approved an ordinance that would allow certain drivers in sparsely populated areas to apply for special permits allowing them to legally drive on rural roads while under the influence of alcohol. The measure, approved by the Kerry County Council by a five-to-three vote with 12 councilmembers absent and seven abstaining, was introduced by a lawmaker who also owns a local pub. Nationally, Irish lawmakers have past stricter regulations to prohibit drunken driving. Motorists with more than 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, a threshold that can reportedly be exceeded by consuming a single pint of beer, are prohibited from operating a vehicle on Ireland’s roadways, but the new guidelines approved by the Kerry County Council would allow residents of lower populated areas to consume additional alcohol.

This legislation, criticized by the country’s Road Safety Authority, would require the council to petition the nation’s Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence in order to issue the special permits. Nearly 33 percent of the fatal accidents that occur in the country involve intoxicated motorists, according to a statement issued by a representative from the alcohol awareness organization Alcohol Action Ireland. Alcohol Action also cited studies connecting suicide and alcohol in refutation of one Kerry County Councilmember’s claims that the law prohibiting drivers from operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol cause isolation and depression for older citizens in areas with fewer people.

More than 200 DUI arrests in Bay Area over New Year’s weekend Comments Off

More than 200 San Francisco Bay Area motorists were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol over the New Year’s weekend, according to a statement issued by the California Highway Patrol. This figure equals the number of DUI arrests made in the area during the same time period in 2011, but the single fatal accident reported in the area over the 2012 holiday weekend is a 66 percent decrease in the number of fatalities during the same time period the previous year. Throughout the state, according to the CHP, 16 people were killed in fatal traffic accidents over the 2012 New Year’s weekend, four of whom were reportedly not wearing seat belts.

CHP: More than 1,200 Californians arrested for New Year’s DUIs Comments Off

Last year, the California Highway Patrol arrested more than 1,200 people on charged of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol over the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend, and three dozen people were killed in traffic accidents involving a drunk driver in that same period of time. In response, the CHP, in cooperation with the state’s other law enforcement agencies, announced a Maximum Enforcement period beginning Friday, December 28, and lasting through the last minutes of 2012. During this time period, officers will be out in increased numbers and focused primarily on stopping and arresting drivers with a blood alcohol content exceeding the legal .08 limit. A similar effort over the Christmas holiday this year netted 1,170 DUI arrests, according to a statement released by CHP representatives.

Resolve to be a better driver in 2013, safety experts urge Comments Off

Many people make resolutions at the end of December in an effort to improve their lives in the upcoming year, and while common New Year’s resolutions such as  exercising more and eating less fatty foods may help people live happier, longer lives, some safety experts are recommending drivers take the opportunity to resolve to take steps to prevent one of the most common killers in the United States — auto accidents. By making the following New Year’s resolutions for safer driving auto safety experts say drivers can reduce the number of collisions that occur on American roadways in 2013.

More people than ever are remembering to buckle their auto safety belts before hitting the road, according to the most recent data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with approximately 86 percent of the drivers surveyed reporting that they use their seat belts as mandated by state and federal traffic laws. Experts estimate that more than 12,000 accident victims are spared from sustaining fatal injuries by their seat belts each year, and safety advocates strongly recommend that drivers resolve to double check their seat belt buckles in the coming new year, even on short car trips. Passengers in the front and back seat as well as the driver benefit from extra protection with their seat belts fastened, experts say.

Additionally, more than 9,800 people were killed in auto accidents involving a drunk driver in 2011, a number that accounts for more than 30 percent of all fatal collisions and a statistic safety advocates hope will be drastically reduced in the near future as more motorists realize the potential dangers they are creating for themselves and others when they get behind the wheel with a blood alcohol content in excess of the legal limit. Advocates urge motorists to resolve not to drive under the influence of alcohol. Calling a cab or designating a sober driver before a night out on the town can prevent tragedy from occurring in 2013.

According to the most recent accident statistics, pedestrians on average are killed in approximately 13 percent of all fatal traffic accidents, a rate safety experts suggest could drop significantly if drivers would resolve to better obey pedestrian right-of-way laws in the future, paying extra attention in areas of high foot traffic and near cross walks and school zones. Pedestrians could reduce the likelihood they will be struck by a car by wearing brighter clothes and remaining vigilant in the presence of approaching vehicles.

More than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving accidents involving a driver talking or text messaging on a handheld cellphone while behind the wheel in 2011. Resolving to hang up and drive in 2013 could potentially save thousands of lives, safety experts advise.

Bay Area law officers made fewer DUI arrests over 2012 holiday weekend Comments Off

According to the California Highway Patrol, law enforcement officials in the Bay Area made fewer arrests on charges of driving while intoxicated over the holiday weekend in 2012 in comparison to the previous year, but more fatal accidents occurred during that time period this year than last year. Bay Area officers arrested 165 people for alleged DUIs in the 2012 holiday weekend, down from the 188 arrests they made during the 2011 holiday weekend. While no fatal accidents occurred in the region during that time period in 2011, three people were killed in fatal accidents in the Bay Area during the time period between December 21 at 6pm and December 25 at 6am.

California Highway Patrol: Holiday traffic deaths, DUI arrests up in 2012 Comments Off

According to accident reports released by the California Highway Patrol, three people were killed in traffic collisions in Los Angeles County during the 2012 Christmas holiday, an increase from the 2011 holiday season, when no traffic-related deaths were reported. This increase in traffic fatalities is compatible with a larger statewide trend. A total of 14 traffic-related deaths were reported throughout the state of California during the 2011 Christmas holiday, according to CHP data, a number that has nearly doubled in 2012, with 26 traffic fatalities reported statewide.

During this time period, which lasted from 6:01 p.m.  Friday, December 21, 2012 to 6: a.m. Christmas morning, arrests for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol also increased in comparison to last year. In Los Angeles County, 257 drivers were arrested under allegations of DUI, an increase of more than 25% from the 201 DUI arrests reported during the 2011 holiday weekend. Across the state of California, highway patrol officers reported making 1,060 arrests for alleged DUI charges, 80 more DUI arrests than they reported making during the same time period in 2011.

I hope that these figures are a statistical anomaly and do not represent a larger trend toward increased danger on California’s roadways. More drunken drivers would represent a serious danger to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists throughout the state, so I hope that the larger number of arrests discourages more people from engaging in this dangerous behavior.

DUI rates spike at holiday time, government warns Comments Off

According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 10,000 people were killed in traffic accidents linked to a driver under the influence of alcohol in 2011. Nearly 400 of these deaths occurred in the last two weeks of the month of December, a statistic some auto safety experts speculate can be tied to the number of holiday season gatherings where alcohol is served each year. In order to combat the risks posed by a possible increase in the number of intoxicated drivers on American highways, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation says, law enforcement agencies across the nation will send additional officers out on patrol.

In all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, drivers are legally prohibited from operating a motor vehicle if their blood alcohol content is .08 or higher. According to the 2011 accident statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk driving fatalities decreased last year in comparison to years past in 27 states. In Tennessee, New York, and South Carolina drunk driving fatalities decreased by more than 30 deaths in comparison to 2010, and Texas had the largest decrease in deaths with 57 fewer fatalities. Not every state saw a drop in drunk driving fatalities, however. New Jersey, Florida, and New Jersey all had an increase of 30 or more fatal accidents compared to the previous year.

In an effort to further decrease the number of deaths that occur due to drunk driving in the United States this year, the NHTSA launched a TV and radio ad campaign costing more than $7 million beginning this summer. This campaign has also had the cooperation of the Governors Highway Safety Association and the Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.

According to a statement released by the NHTSA, drivers can avoid a DUI charge by planning ahead and designating a sober driver, taking a taxi, or calling a sober friend or family member to ask for a ride home.

Safety experts offer drivers several tips for spotting and avoiding drunk drivers on the road. Some signs that a vehicle is being driven under the influence include weaving between lanes, making extremely wide turns, driving without headlights, erratic braking and inappropriate stopping. If you suspect a nearby vehicle is being operated by a drunk driver, safety experts advise keeping as much distance as possible between it and your vehicle as possible. Do not attempt to pass the vehicle or follow it very closely.
