Fatal Motorcycle Accident Triggers Second Fatal Crash Comments Off

Two separate accidents involving motorcyclists claimed two lives, the California Highway Patrol has reported.

According to multiple news agencies, the first fatal accident happened when a motorcyclist lost control of the bike as he was traveling on the State Route 74. He was going at about 50 mph when he failed to drive around the bend safely by veering into the oncoming traffic. The vehicle crashed head-on against a Ford SUV, causing the rider to flip over. The man tumbled down a 40-foot embankment on the south side of the road as a result. After the accident, emergency crews rushed the man to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Later the same day, as the California Highway Patrol carried out an investigation, another motorcyclist spotted riding carelessly on the same route failed to slow down once traffic hit the partially blocked part of the road, causing the man to brake his motorcycle hard enough that it caused the motorcycle to careen out of control. The vehicle veered into oncoming traffic lanes, where it tipped over and slid. The rider became trapped once him and his vehicle slid under a Ford truck that was stopped on the north shoulder of the road.

In spite of the fact many bystanders helped to release the man from underneath the vehicle, emergency responders were not able to save him. He was declared dead as a result of his injuries.

Motorcyclists, bicyclists targeted in law enforcement crack down Comments Off

The California Highway Patrol launched an increased enforcement effort focused on motorcyclists and bicyclists in Marin County this weekend in response to multiple complaints of dangerous behavior on state Highway 1. According to a CHP representative many motorcyclists travel between Point Reyes and Tam Junction on Sunday mornings, and some motorists have reported motorcyclists racing one another at unsafe speeds, crossing double yellow lines and performing unsafe stunts. Motorcylce lane-splitting restrictions withdrawn from consideration Comments Off

Proposed legislation that would place restrictions on motorcycles lane splitting in the state of California has been withdrawn from consideration by its sponsor, according to the American Motorcyclist Association. Lane splitting, currently only legal in the state of California, allows motorcycles to move through slow moving traffic by weaving between lanes to pass vehicles. The law allowing lane-splitting was instated in an attempt to ease traffic congestion, and some motorcycle advocates have said that the proposed restrictions — motorcycles would only be allowed to lane split on divided highways with at least three lanes, and only when traffic is congested — would require the state to rethink traffic management completely.

The California Highway Patrol recently released guidelines for safe lane-splitting, which did not include a minimum lane requirement.

Motorcyclists advised on lane-splitting by California Highway Patrol Comments Off

California is currently the only state in the U.S. to allow motorcyclists to lane-split, a controversial maneuver in which motorcycles pass larger vehicles by weaving in between them. Motorists often report being confused about the legality of lane-splitting, and in response, California Highway Patrol officials released a statement on their website detailing the specifics of the practice, which officers say is legal but not always safe. According to state law, motorcyclists can legally pass between two vehicles if there is enough room to safely do so, but they are not allowed to exceed the speed of the vehicles they are passing by more than 10 miles per hour.

Fire hazard prompts KTM to recall Enduro motorcycles Comments Off

Due to a potential fuel leak and fire hazard, KTM North America, Inc., of Amherst, Ohio, has issued a voluntary recall for approximately 1,300 Enduro motorcycles. These motorcycles, manufactured by KTM-Sportmotorcycle AG, of Mattighofen, Austria, are equipped with a pre-formed fuel hose that can develop small holes or cracks, potentially allowing fuel to leak and creating a potential collision and fire hazard. Motorcycle safety website launched offering statistics, tips Comments Off

In response to the more than 1,400 motorcycle crashes that resulted in injury or death in the state last year, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office has launched a new motorcycle safety education website to inform motorcyclists of state law, while also offering safety tips and information about educational training courses. In addition, the site includes educational videos and links to other web based motorcycle safety resources.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, the state had nearly 130,000 licensed motorcyclists in 2011, meaning more than 1 percent of registered motorcyclists were injured or killed in an accident that year. Of the 82 motorcycle operators who died in fatal accidents in the state last year, 29 were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, according to a report published by the OHSO, and 18 were not wearing a helmet. Additionally, 13 people died while riding as passengers, for a total of 95 fatal accidents. Nearly half of all fatal accidents were single vehicle crashes.

To prevent motorcycle accidents, safety experts recommend following proper maintenance procedures and adjusting the motorcycle’s mirrors to maximize unobstructed peripheral and rear view vision. Vibrating mirrors can be a safety hazard and should be fitted with an isolator to hold them in place. Chipped or cracked mirrors should be replaced immediately.

Motorcycle death rates climb while feds question grant limitations Comments Off

Motorcycle riders are dying at an increasing rate on Tennessee roadways, according to recently released traffic accident statistics, and the U.S. Government Accountability has found that the federal grants given to states to increase motorcycle safety could be more effectively spent if states had fewer limitations placed on the types of programs these grants can be used to fund. To date, 133 motorcyclists have died in traffic accidents throughout the state in 2012, more than a 16 percent increase from the 114 fatal motorcycle accidents that occurred throughout all of 2011. Some safety advocates say that mandatory motorcycle safety classes might reverse this trend.
