SUV Could Be Safer Than Passenger Vehicles, Study Suggests Comments Off

Multiple news agencies have indicated that a recent study carried out by the University of Buffalo shows that when SUVs are involved in head-on collisions, drivers in smaller passenger vehicles are more likely to be fatally injured as a result. The driver in a small passenger car is 10 times more likely to die if involved in an accident with an SUV than if the vehicle is involved in a collision with another similarly small car. That is due to the fact that SUVs tend to ride over shorter passenger vehicles, which causes the larger vehicle to crush the occupant of the smaller car.

When it comes to SUV safety, the study points out that a driver in an SUV is seven times less likely to die in all head-on crashes than drivers inside of passenger cars. Vehicles that scored better crash ratings in several tests did not do better when involved in accidents with larger vehicles. Even when two vehicles that are the same weight collide, the occupants in the SUV are more likely to survive than the occupants in another type of vehicle.

The reports indicate that larger and newer SUVs are the safest vehicles on the roadways nowadays. These vehicles tend to roll over less often and are frequently competent when it comes to keeping the driver and other occupants from being injured in collisions. According to the study, drivers may feel overly confident when they purchase a passenger vehicle with excellent safety ratings. According to safety experts, drivers should keep in mind that purchasing a vehicle that obtained great safety ratings does not make the vehicles crash-proof.

When looking for a vehicle, experts urge, consumers must remember that larger SUVs tend to be more likely to keep occupants safe in major collisions.

Choose The Right Car Safety Seat For Your Child Comments Off

Auto safety is important but child and car safety is even more important, reports show.

According to several news reports, parents in Canada and United States are overlooking the importance of having a car safety seat or booster seat that meets their children’s needs. Making good use of a car safety seat means also making sure that the device is installed correctly and that the model of the device is designed for the child’s specific height, weight and age.

Safety experts are urging consumers to make sure they are aware of the fact that car safety seats should be installed and latched to the car in a way that any movement to either direction is impossible. According to some researchers, parents in Canada fail to properly install the seats. More than one third of all children in Canada are not restrained properly. In the United States, four out of every five car safety seats are not installed correctly. In the United States, many parents are unaware that in most sates, children are supposed to be placed in booster seats only when they are at least 8-years-old or weigh at least 8- pounds. Once your child outgrows the forward-facing seat, never allow the child to simply sit as an adult in the passenger seat. Make sure to use a booster seat in order to ensure the strap and the safety features are effective. When a child that is not tall enough to have his or her head reaching the car’s headrest, the child must be placed in a booster seat that has an adjustable headrest and that ensures the seat belt will do its job in protecting the child in the case of an accident.

According to some of the experts, when you purchase a car safety seat you should make sure to read the product’s instructions manual in order to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. According to the experts, as soon as the child weighs 40 pounds, he or she should be moved out of a 5-point harness seat and a booster seat should be used next. Both types of restraint systems should always be installed in a way that keeps the device latched to the car in a way that the seat won’t move. Make sure that the harness is tight and that the fabric the straps are made with is not loose enough you can pinch it.

Children should not be moved to a forward-facing car safety seat until they reach their first year of age or weigh 20 pounds or more. According to some of the experts, children should only move to a forward-facing seat when they are 2-years-old.

Whenever you are looking into purchasing a car safety seat, make sure you choose the one seat that is designed for your child’s weight and age group. The child’s body is frail and it’s much more susceptible to become injured as a result of an accident.

Prevent accidents and make sure that your child is being seated safely while riding in a car with you and your loved ones. Follow this link to read more on this story.

Smaller California Limos Are Not Subject To Safety Inspections Comments Off

Multiple news agencies have indicated that the limo fire that caught the attention of the nation and is now under investigation may have been caused due to a lack of inspections carried out by state agencies since smaller California limos are not required to go under the same type of inspection larger limos go through.

The reports indicate that the incident that took place on the San Mateo Bridge killed five women. The limo that caught fire was not required to undergo a state safety inspection prior to its use. It was also not required to carry a fire extinguisher. The regulations that were drawn to maintain limo drivers and passengers safe in California, small limos like the one involved in the incident are usually modified 1999 Lincoln Town Cars. These vehicles are usually cut in half, which forces the fuel and electrical lines to be severed and rebuilt in order to offer more space. Usually, these limos carry fewer than 10 people and when that’s the case, the state doe not require these vehicles to be routinely inspected for safety.

Larger limos are required to be inspected for safety every 13 months. These regulations also apply to airport shuttles and other larger vehicles such as buses.

At this moment, lawmakers are hoping to push for tougher regulations in order to avoid accidents such as the one in California that claimed five lives.

A lawmaker is hoping to close the loophole in order to make sure that even small limos are inspected. The issue with the lack of fire extinguishers is also being addressed. According to the reports, a bill is being introduced to make limos of all sizes, including the smaller ones, required to carry a fire extinguisher at all times.

Some experts investigating this incident and how the vehicle may have engulfed in flames have indicated that radical modifications to the vehicle’s wiring could add stress to several important systems like electrical wiring and fuel lines. Presently, the Public Utilities Commission does not have any regulations concerning the building of stretch limousines from modified standard vehicles. The vehicle involved in the Saturday incident that claimed the lives of 5 women was owned by a company that never received any complaints in the past. The driver reported that when he heard the passengers screaming about a fire he didn’t smell gas and because of that, he thinks that the problem that led to a fire was electrical.

The vehicle was carrying nine passengers, which is one passenger more than what the vehicle was licensed to carry.

According to most news sources covering this incident, statistics involving limo fires are not easy to come by especially because limo fires are rare. The reports also show that the state is not aware of how many limos are standard vehicles that were stretched and modified.

Unfortunately, many children are injured in household accidents that could have been prevented. Following some preventative measures could also help you to prevent other incidents associated with fires that result in property damage.

A recent survey showed that consumers are sometimes unaware of risks associated with common households products and even common activities. According to the Consumer Reports National Research Center, two in five homeowners are aware of the importance of keeping a fire extinguisher nearby at all times. In spite of the fact many homeowners are still unaware of certain risks, the survey shows that most Americans are aware of the importance of teaching their children how to play safely outdoors.

Some of the most common accidents that happen inside of the home or outdoor include trips, burns and slips. These injuries send tens of thousands of people to the hospital every year.

Grilling, which is one of the most popular outdoor activities in America, is still a fairly unsafe practice among most consumers surveyed by the agency. Most consumers forget to use nonflammable pass to protect their deck, which could cause components to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. Others forget to keep an extinguisher nearby while working the grill, which could also lead to a fire. According to the reports, fire pits are also responsible for several injuries and burns reported each year. Official data shows that an estimated 2,900 injuries associated with fire pits were reported in 2011.

Consumers are urged by safety agencies to follow certain tips and make sure that their children and family members are safe from potential risks associated with household items.

Checking de deck before letting your children go outside could help to prevent accidents. Also, keep in mind that having extinguishers nearby could help you to contain fires associated with fire pits or grilling activities.

Provide sun protection to your children at all times while playing outside during summertime and teach them how to play safely.

When it comes to hanging out by the pool, making sure your children are safe is also important. If your older children do not know how to swim well, don’t let them play around the pool without the supervision of an adult.

Also, make sure to safeguard swing sets as well.
