U.S. fuel efficiency standards to become stricter by 2025 Comments Off

U.S. government automobile efficiency standards will become significantly stricter in the near future, according to Transportation Department officials, who have not provided an exact timeline for the change. Current standards require automakers to achieve an average fuel efficiency rate of 35.5 miles per gallon across their American product line by 2016, but the new regulations currently being finalized would increase the required fuel efficiency standard to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

Canadians texting while driving, walking more frequently Comments Off

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association reports that Canadians send nearly 227 million text messages per day on average, and research indicates that many of these messages are sent by drivers and pedestrians, putting themselves and others in danger by dividing their attention. Some texters believe their actions are too brief to provide a significant distraction, but safety advocates point to several recent fatal accidents linked to distracted drivers that have occurred in the country.

Study: Vulnerable older population in need of food safety education Comments Off

Elderly people, who often possess weakened immune systems, are at a greater risk of contracting a foodborne illness than the average population, but a study conducted by RTI International and Tennessee State University scientists concluded that neither the elderly nor their caregivers and health providers, receive proper food safety education. Bicycle safety takes priority in Idaho city Comments Off

Though Boise, Idaho, was included in the U.S. Census Bureau’s list of the top 50 bike-friendly cities and ranks fourth in the U.S. for bicycle commuters per capita, some say bicyclists and motorists could use a refresher course on traffic laws. Bicycles must be equipped with red reflector lights visible from 300 feet and a white headlight visible from 500 feet at night. Motorists are required to allow bicyclists a minimum of three feet when passing.

Move Over America promotes rescue worker safety legislation Comments Off

Data collected by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund indicates that more than 150 American law enforcement officers have died after being hit by motor vehicles. In response, the nationwide safety campaign Move Over America, a cooperative effort including many law enforcement groups and traffic safety advocates, was launched to increase awareness of the Move Over laws, which require motorists to either slow down or move over or both when they pass a stationary emergency response vehicle on the roadway. At the campaign’s website, an interactive map informs users of which states have these laws in place, and a petition is offered to citizens in states with no such law currently in place.

AAA website offers database of state ‘Move Over’ laws Comments Off

The Digest of Motor Laws section of the American Automotive Association’s website is an online resource offering summaries and explanations of the state, local, and federal traffic laws governing passenger vehicles. The information on the site is compiled from state and national regulations and information submitted by local law enforcement agencies.

One section of the site offers a summary of the “Move Over” laws (or lack thereof) in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. “Move Over” laws dictate the way motorists are expected to respond when driving on a roadway occupied by a stopped emergency vehicle flashing its lights.

California’s Move On law, for example, requires drivers to slow down when they see a parked emergency response vehicle – including department of transportation vehicles and tow trucks — flashing its lights and, if necessary, move out of the lane adjacent to the vehicle.

Distracted driving laws difficult to enforce, some say Comments Off

While texting and driving is dangerous, many speculate that police will have a difficult time enforcing the new texting bans being enacted in communities across the United States because many of these laws require officers to be absolutely certain the person was being distracted by the technological device. In many cases, police are required to  eyewitnesses the actual texting in order to legally pull over the distracted driver, and in many states, texting while driving is a secondary offense, meaning police officers can only issue citations for violating the ban if the texting driver is also breaking another traffic law.
