Blue Bird recalls Vision buses due to possible loss of control risk Comments Off

More than 220 model year 2013 Vision conventional school buses manufactured between August and November of 2012 have been voluntarily recalled by Blue Bird Body Company due to a potential loss of control hazard that can increase the risk of an accident. According to the official recall notice issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles may have been equipped with improperly torqued drag link castle nuts, which can allow excessive motion at the connection between the steering arm and drag link, possibly resulting in a separation and, ultimately loss of steering control. If this occurs while the vehicle is in motion, the likelihood that the vehicle will be involved in an accident would increase.

Woman ordered to wear ‘idiot’ sign after driving on the sidewalk Comments Off

A judge ordered a 32-year-old Cleveland woman who plead guilty to driving on the sidewalk alongside a stopped school bus to wear a sign declaring her to be an “idiot” at the scene of the incident for one hour per day for two days next week. In addition to the punishment, the woman’s license was suspended for 30 days and she was ordered by the Cleveland Municipal Court judge to pay $250 in court costs. The sign the judge ordered the woman, who plead guilty for reckless driving and failure to stop for a school bus, to wear reads “Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid the school bus.” The woman was arrested after the school bus driver captured a video of her with his cellphone camera. The driver had reportedly seen her driving on the sidewalk to avoid the stopped bus on several previous occasions.

Blue Bird recalls school buses due to instrument panel malfunction Comments Off

Blue Bird Body Company has announced a voluntary recall for 19 of its model year 2013 Vision school buses due to a potential instrument panel malfunction. These buses, manufactured between May 10, 2012 and June 7, 2012, violate the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard regulating “Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems,” because the electronic module responsible for activating the hydraulic brake pressure indicator light may not have been installed during the manufacturing process.

High tech, high concept bus stops encourage commuters to take the bus Comments Off

In an effort to encourage more commuters to use public transportation, cities around the world have begun to update their bus stops with modern technology to make them more efficient, functional, and even fun. Seattle’s King County Metro Transit, for example, has partnered with local communities to encourage young artists to decorate local bus stops in an effort to discourage graffiti. Designs include animal prints and multicultural paintings.

A bus stop in Florence, Italy, uses solar powered technology developed by MIT’s Senseable City Lab to provide commuters with interactive touch screen maps and bus location information. The entire bus stop shelter begins to glow as the bus approaches. A bus stop in Ventura, California employs a sculptor’s eye catching design in an effort to attract interest to public transportation. The stop also offers restrooms, drinking fountains, and an information station. A Rapid Ride terminal in King County allows commuters to use their transit passes to pay for the bus ride before the bus even arrives. Some bus stops in Dubai offer commuters shelter from the desert heat in air condition cooled bus stops. Many of these air conditioners malfunctioned, however, when riders left the bus stop doors a jar. The city of Konagai, Japan gives commuters fruit shaped bus stops in 16 different “flavors” including strawberry and watermelon varieties. These bus stops were built as an attraction at the 1990 Travel Expo.

Blue Bird recalls 13 school buses due to two related brake issues Comments Off

Blue Bird Body Company is recalling all 2013 rear-engine school buses produced from December 9th, 2011 until March 9th, 2012. This recall has been issued on a voluntary basis in cooperation with a request made by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because he brake valve plunger installed in these vehicles  may fracture, possibly leading to the operator having difficulty or a total inability to brake due to a reduced brake pedal angle, the brake plunger may also become stuck, preventing the operator from releasing the vehicle’s service brakes. In either state, a school bus would become more difficult to control and stop safely, thus increasing the likelihood that the vehicle would become involved in an accident, perhaps leading to serious injury or death.  Blue Bird will begin notifying the affected owners of this potential safety hazard in the near future, according to the official recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. The school bus models included in this recall were sold exclusively through A-Z Bus Sales, a licensed Blue Bird school bus dealership. School buses affected by this potential safety hazard may return them to their original place of purchase, where  the potentially defective part will be replaced free of charge. Blue Bird recall campaign number R12VF, which affects a total of 13 school buses,  is scheduled to begin at the end of this month.
