Trailstar Marine boat trailers recalled due to brake failure hazard Comments Off

As of June 28 2012, Tracker Marine LLC, will begin a recall campaign including nearly 600 boat trailers. The recall was put into action because of a welding issue affecting the brake actuator shell. Approximately 600 units are effected and owners of the boat trailer models included in this recall will be notified in the near future. The boat trailer models included in this recall are model year 2012 and 2013 Trailstar Nitro 290 Sport, Nitro Z7, Nitro Sport Z7, Nitro Z8, Nitro Z9, Tahoe 195, Tahoe 215, Tahoe 22, Tahoe Q4, Tahoe Q5, Tahoe Q7, and Tahoe Q8 boat trailers. A variant bracket weld in the brake actuator shell may limit the master cylinder shaft rod’s range of motion, potentially causing the brakes to overheat. Overheating may lead to wheel bearing or brake failure, increasing the likelihood that the boat trailer will become involved in a collision causing serious injury or death. This recall, scheduled to begin early next month, has been issued voluntarily in cooperation with a request from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Owners of boat trailers affected by this safety recall, designated by manufacturer as recall campaign number TS-0027, can return them to authorized Tracker Marine dealerships, where they will be inspected and, if necessary, repaired by licensed technicians at no cost. For more information regarding this recall, contact Tracker Marrine LLC’s customer service department and reference the campaign number listed above.

Dexter brake pump recall expanded to include Delta flatbed trucks Comments Off

The 2011 Delta 210 and 212 GN flatbed trucks are being recalled voluntarily in compliance with a request issued by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,  due to complications caused by the fact that the Dexter Axle brand electric brake actuator pump may not have been properly heat treated during the manufacturing process. As a result this component may wear down prematurely and cease functioning unexpectedly, potentially while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the likelihood that the vehicle will become involved in a traffic collision, possibly resulting in serious injury or death. These potentially defective auto components will be replaced by licensed technicians at authorized  Dexter dealerships free of charge, according to the official vehicle recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. This recall, designated by NHSTA campaign identification number 12V276000, is an expansion of a larger ongoing recall campaign, designated by NHTSA action number EQ12003, that affects trailers of various models and brand names that have been equipped with potentially defective Dexter Axle brand electric hydraulic brake actuator pumps. Because these Dexter Axle brand electric hydraulic brake actuator pumps serve as the power supplies for these trailer braking systems, the braking system may completely cease to function if the brake actuator pump fails. More information regarding this recall can be obtained by contacting Dexter Axle’s customer service department or the NHSTA vehicle safety hotline.

Two Tipped Big Rigs Wreak Havoc Throughout the South Bay Comments Off

A pair of overturned big rigs caused havoc all around the South Bay yesterday.

The first incident occurred at around 1:30 in the morning yesterday in Oakland.  A tractor trailer was traveling along the northbound side of Interstate 880.  When the vehicle approached the area close to High Street, it reportedly drove into sand barrels along the road and careened over a concrete divider, according to the California Highway Patrol.  The vehicle tipped, and in the process leaked around eighty gallons of diesel fuel.  Three lanes had to be closed until shortly before 5 am so that the truck could be set right and the spill could be cleared.

The other incident took place at around 3:30 in the morning in Cupertino.  A big rig was traveling south along the ramp between Interstate Highway 280 and the northbound side of Highway 85.  The tractor trailer, which was carrying a load of concrete at the time, was reportedly going around 25 miles per hour and tipped over onto its side.   The driver claimed that his load likely shifted while he was navigating.  The ramp had to be closed until 3 o’clock in the afternoon.  The CHP is investigating the crash.

Luckily, no one appears to have been injured in either of the reported crashes.

Fed Ex Tractor Trailer Catches Fire, Spills Diesel in Clear Lake Comments Off

A vehicle fire forced officials to deal with a diesel spill that threatened a local ecosystem.

It all happened east of Clearlake Oaks just prior to midnight last night.  A Fed Ex tractor trailer was traveling down Highway 20 when the incident occurred.  When the vehicle, which was pulling two trailers, reached the area east of Hillside Drive, it reportedly traveled off the road for reasons that are unknown, and part of one of the trailers careened over a wall and into nearby Clear Lake.

The semi truck went up in flames (whether prior to or after the crash is unclear) and firefighters arrived on the scene to put out the blaze.  The driver was able to exit the vehicle before he was injured.  It didn’t take long for officials to put out the fire and prevent it from reaching a nearby forested area.

Authorities surmised that around 150 to 200 gallons of diesel fuel had leaked into the lake.  The California Department of Fish and Game, Lake County Environmental Health, and Lake County Office of Emergency Services were all notified of the incident.

Booms had to be installed in order to prevent the diesel from spreading and causing further damage to the area.  Northshore Dive Team and Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol helped out with that operation.
